The American Medical Association (AMA) updated E/M codes 99202-99215 on January 1, 2021, to reduce administrative workload and align with contemporary patient care practices. The changes removed the need for specific standards for history and examination, requiring a medically suitable history and/or physical examination. The 2023 guidelines now accommodate all E/M categories, including hospital, inpatient, and outpatient consultations.
